[solved] Update for Bricked Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio devices despite factory reset

Around March 9, 2025, Chromecast 2nd Gen and Chromecast Audio devices became inoperable due to an expired security certificate. Google has now started to roll out a fix for the problem. However, if you have factory reset your Chromecast like me, you have a problem because offline devices cannot get the fix.

The reason for the problem is an expired certificate

This is good to know, because it is the key to how you can reset a Chromecast despite a factory reset.

Since you are setting up the Chromecast via your smartphone and the setup cannot be completed due to the expired certificate, do the following:

Manually set the date of your smartphone to a period before March 9.

You should then be able to complete the setup and receive the update.
